In Native American culture, the clothing of a tribe is very important. It should not be used as a costume by nonindigenous people.

It can feel bad to make a mistake, but admitting we’re wrong and apologizing is the first step to doing better.

WHEN WE DISAGREE

Sometimes people argue about what is or is not offensive. When someone disagrees with us it can be hard to keep our temper, especially when the disagreement is about something important to us. But when we have disagreements we should try to remember that arguments are unpleasant for everyone. Being upset is not an excuse to be mean or disrespectful to people. You cannot change someone’s mind if you’re being mean to them.

SEEING THE OTHER SIDE

Rather than resorting to bullying, try thinking about the situation from the other person’s point of view. Try to see the reasoning behind their opinion. Think about all the different parts of their identity and attempt to figure out how their different identities— their intersectionality—may have shaped their point of view. This process of trying to understand how others think and feel is called empathy. It is a sign that we care for others.

Many disagreements come from misunderstandings. Having empathy for others can help us avoid unnecessary arguments. But just because we understand how someone feels doesn’t mean we have to agree with them. Empathy helps everyone to feel heard and respected even when they disagree.
